The federal General Services Administration is looking to do its part to help schools affected by Hurricane Katrina. Last week, the GSA announced a Furniture for Schools Task Force that would help find desks and chairs and get them to needy schools.

The Department of Education, the Department of Defense Logistics Agency, and the Federal Emergency Management Agency are also members of the task force.

The goal is to streamline efforts to match the needs of schools and districts with excess federal furniture and supplies, including bookshelves, filing cabinets, tables, desks, and chairs, according to a Nov. 2 press release. The furniture will go mostly to hurricane-ravaged Louisiana and Mississippi, but also to states where schools have taken in displaced students.

Schools seeking donations should register their requests at the Department of Education’s “Hurricane Help for Schools” Web site at www.ed.gov/Katrina.
