Diane Ravitch, the education historian and author, has received the 2005 John Dewey Award for Excellence in Education from the United Federation of Teachers.
The award, presented May 14, is the most prestigious honor bestowed by the 140,000-member New York City affiliate of the American Federation of Teachers.
Ms. Ravitch, 66, is a research professor of education at New York University and the author of eight books. She was an assistant U.S. secretary of education during President George H.W. Bush’s administration and an appointee to the National Assessment Governing Board under President Clinton.
