The Montana Supreme Court issued a 30-page decision March 23 elaborating on why it ruled last fall that the state’s public school funding system is unconstitutional. In the unanimous decision, Justice William Leaphart pointed to schools’ growing accreditation problems, deteriorating buildings, the reduction of programs, and a trend toward qualified teachers leaving Montana for other states. He cited those problems as evidence that the current system is “constitutionally deficient.”
