  • A commission convened by the Washington-based Council for Basic Education contends that history is being crowded out of the curriculum by other disciplines classified as “social studies.”
  • The U.S. Supreme Court hears a case involving whether two religious schools that discriminate on the basis of race, including Bob Jones University of Greenville, S.C., should be eligible for federal tax exemptions.
  • Boggs Academy of Keysville, Ga., believed to be the only remaining private boarding school in the nation for black students, is struggling to survive as its enrollment declines.

10 years ago ...OCT. 21, 1992

  • After running afoul of the city teachers’ union, a slate of candidates that promised to bring choice to Detroit’s public schools is struggling to keep its seats in the upcoming elections.
  • Five of New York City’s 32 community school districts remain in a standoff with Schools Chancellor Joseph A. Fernandez over the “Children of the Rainbow” curriculum for 1st graders, which includes information on families with gay or lesbian parents.
