The Afterschool Alliance has hired Judy Y. Samelson as its executive director. Ms. Samelson, 50, has been the group's acting director since 1999. Before joining the alliance, which is based in Flint, Mich., she served as a communications consultant for the Charles Stewart Mott Foundation, a private philanthropy also based in Flint that supports nonprofit programs nationwide.

The Afterschool Alliance is a coalition of public, private, and nonprofit organizations that promotes investment and research in after-school programs and greater public awareness of them.

Joni L. Henderson

Joni L. Henderson has been appointed the chief development officer of the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards. Ms. Henderson previously served as the the director of capital region advancement and corporate relations for the Smithsonian Institution in Washington. In her new role, she will work toward increasing private support for national board certification.

The NBPTS, an independent, nonprofit organization based in Arlington, Va., was founded in 1987 to advance the quality of teaching and learning nationwide. It offers recognition to teachers who are deemed outstanding after undergoing the board's voluntary certification process. The 63-member board includes school administrators, legislators, and teachers.

Richard K. Anderson

Richard K. Anderson has been hired by the National School Boards Association to be its new associate executive director for federation services. Mr. Anderson, 59, served as the Minnesota School Boards Association's executive director for 13 years before joining the NSBA. He succeeds Joseph Villani, now the NSBA's deputy executive director.

The NSBA , based in Alexandria, Va., is a national federation of state and local public school board associations. It seeks to strengthen K-12 school leadership.
