On July 1, James R. Davis will become the superintendent of the 6,000-student Hattiesburg, Miss., school district. Mr. Davis previously was the superintendent of the 16,000-student Plano, Texas, district.

has been named the interim superintendent of the San Francisco Unified School District, replacing outgoing Superintendent

. Ms. Davis has been the deputy superintendent in the 65,000-student district for 13 years. Mr. Rojas is leaving next month to head the 160,000-student Dallas Independent School District.

Sylvan Learning Systems Inc. has tapped Estanislado “Stan” Paz to be the vice president for the Southwest region of the Baltimore-based company. Mr. Paz, 50, is a former superintendent of the El Paso, Texas, district, and most recently was the director of the National Academy for School Executives.

Judsen A. Culbreth is the new vice president and editor in chief of Scholastic Parent Publishing in New York City and will oversee Parent and Child magazine. Ms. Judsen is a former editor in chief of Working Mother magazine, published by MacDonald Communications.

was sworn in last week as the inspector general for the U.S. Department of Education. Ms. Lewis, 43, will head the independent office responsible for detecting and preventing fraud in department operations. She previously was the chief legal adviser to the director of the U.S. Office of Personnel Management.
