The Fresno, Calif., school system has narrowly failed to pass a $215 million bond for school construction.
The counting of absentee ballots left the Fresno Unified School District’s bond referendum with 63.8 percent of the vote, shy of the two-thirds majority required. (See Education Week, 11/16/94.)
The bond was the third defeated in the district in as many years. District officials said they will try again in the spring.
Since the bond’s defeat, dozens of residents have sent the district checks for $24, the amount by which the bond was expected to raise annual taxes on the average home, officials said.
