The Center for Media and Values, a nonprofit group promoting media awareness, has published a curriculum guide that is being packaged with the 15th-anniversary issue of its quarterly, Media&Values.

Designed for use by all student age groups, TV Alert: A Wake-Up Guide to Television Literacy is part of a kit that contains, in addition to the magazine, a teacher’s guide and eight lesson plans on subjects ranging from the effects of TV on family life to media images of gender and ethnicity.

TV Alert is available for $24.95 plus $4 shipping; a supplemental video, “Creating Critical TV Viewers,’' costs $39.95 plus $5 shipping. For information on both, contact the center at 1962 South Shenandoah St., Los Angeles, Calif. 90034; (310) 559-2944.

A magazine exploring the underlying causes of student behavioral and mental disorders is broadening its reach.

Beyond Behavior, originally published solely for members of the Council for Children with Behavioral Disorders, an association of child-behavior specialists, is now available to nonmembers. It addresses the needs of students in grades K-12, with articles that explore societal influences on behavior, such as homelessness, drug abuse, gangs, and culturally diverse rearing practices. Each issue suggests ways to combat disruptive tendencies, including effective classroom management and alternatives to suspension.

Published three times a year, Beyond Behavior is available for $20 for individuals and $35 for institutions. For a limited time, selected back issues will be provided free to new subscribers. Contact Beyond Behavior, 202A Barkley Center, University of Nebraska-Lincoln, Lincoln, Neb. 68583-0732.

A newspaper with structured, simplified versions of stories on current events is giving English-as-a-second-language students a new alternative to standard classroom reading materials.

Second Language English Newsworld, edited by former English-as-a-second-language teachers, is a graphics-packed monthly tabloid developed specifically for lower-intermediate to advanced students of English. Each issue contains, in addition to rewrites of Associated Press news items, features on American culture, language-learning tips, puzzles, and a glossary of difficult terms.

The paper also contains sample sections of the Test of English as a Foreign Language.

A year’s subscription is $11; contact S.L.E. Newsworld, 3010 Wilshire Blvd., Ste. 231, Los Angeles, Calif. 90010; (213) 385-9862.--S.K.G.
