P. Michael Timpane, the president of Teachers College, Columbia University, has announced he will step down from that post in June 1994 after 10 years in office.

Mr. Timpane, 59, will take a year's leave of absence for research and writing and will then return to Teachers College as a professor of education, the school announced last week.

A search committee is being formed to choose a successor.
