Colman Genn, superintendent of Community School District 27 in Queens, N.Y., has been honored separately by Mayor Edward I. Koch and the New York City school board for the "courage and integrity" he showed in uncovering patronage in his district.

Conversations taped secretly by Mr.6Genn revealed that community school board members in his district were pressuring him to hire friends and political allies for positions the superintendent termed "unnecessary." (See Education Week, Nov. 1 1989.)

Mr. Genn's testimony before a commission investigating fraud and corruption in the nation's largest school system led to the suspension of the nine-member District 27 board.
