Legislative Action

Budget Reconciliation/
Child Care
HR 3299
The House late last week approved a budget-reconciliation bill that includes a child-care measure. (See stories, pages 23.)

Camp Safety
The House Education and Labor Committee last week completed three weeks of oversight hearings on youth camp safety.

Copyright Protection
HR 3045, S 497
The House Judiciary Committee last week unanimously approved a bill that would make schools and colleges vulnerable to copyright-infringement lawsuits, a measure education groups have opposed. The Senate Judiciary Committee could mark up a similar measure this week.

Drug-Abuse Prevention
The Senate last week approved a drug bill that would weaken the measure it passed last month to deny federal aid to schools that do not have strict anti-drug policies. (See story, page 25.)

Education Department
Appropriations
HR 2990
A conference committee last week approved a 1990 budget for the Education Department that aides said would total about $24.1 billion. (See story, page 23.)

Indian Education Appropriations

The House has approved the conference report on a $10.2-billion Interior Department appropriations bill that would allocate $361 million in fiscal 1990 for Indian-education programs of the Bureau of Indian Affairs and the Education Department. (See story, page 23.)

National Science Foundation/
Asbestos Appropriations
HR 2916
Both the House and Senate have passed funding measures for the National Science Foundation and school asbestos-abatement efforts. A conference committee could begin meeting this week. (See story, page 23.)

Teacher Recruitment
Senators Edward M. Kennedy of Massachusetts and Claiborne Pell of Rhode Island Sept. 26 introduced two measures to provide financial incentives designed to encourage young people to become teachers.
