Secretary of Education William J. Bennett has selected 115 teachers for the department’s 1987 Christa McAuliffe Fellowship Program, which honors the New Hampshire teacher who died on the space shuttle Challenger in January 1986.
The fellowship recipients, chosen from 47 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, Guam, the Virgin Islands, American Samoa, the Northern Mariana Islands, and the Republic of Palau, are full-time public- or private-school classroom teachers. The fellows were chosen by state panels, which included school administrators, teachers, parents, and others.
Fellowship stipends of up to the national teacher-salary average of $25,313, are awarded the winning teachers for up to 12 months. The winners will apply them to a variety of projects, including research, sabbaticals for study, the development of innovative programs, consultation with other school systems, or model instructional and staff-development programs.
Each McAuliffe fellow has agreed to return to a teaching position in his or her school district, private school, or private-school system for at least two years after completion of the fellowship.
