No Progress in Chicago Strike

The Illinois Education Labor Relations Board ruled last week that the Chicago Board of Education erred in eliminating three days from the school calendar without notifying the union and without bargaining.

“That complaint will be added to a long list at the bargaining table,” said Mike Harrington, spokesman for the Chicago Teachers Union. He said there had been virtually no movement in negotiations between the union and the school board.

In Boston, members of the Citywide Parents Council have asked Education Commissioner Harold Raynolds Jr. to order the Boston School Department to provide alternate transportation for the 27,000 students affected by a school-bus drivers’ strike there.

Nationwide, a total of 44 strikes have been reported so far this year, compared with 51 at this time last year. Thirteen teacher strikes in seven states remain unsettled.
