Education Department grants. The Education Department published, in the Aug. 31 Federal Register, fiscal information and closing dates for certain grant applications, including some for continuing grants in handicapped education and field-initiated research, as well as new fellowships in bilingual education. Detailed information on each grant and the names of people to contact were listed.

Education statistics. The Education Department announced, in the Sept. 10 Federal Register, a meeting of the Advisory Council on Education Statistics on Oct. 15-16, in room 823, 1200 19th St., N.W., Washington. The council reviews general policies for the operation of the National Center for Education Statistics. The meeting is open to the public.

Financing education. The Education Department announced, in the Sept. 13 Federal Register, a meeting of the Advisory Panel on Financing Elementary and Secondary Education on Sept. 27-28, 9 A.M.-5 P.M., on the mezzanine floor of the Cathedral Hill Hotel, Van Ness and Geary streets, San Francisco. The panel advises the secretary of education and Congress concerning public policies for raising and distributing revenues to support elementary and secondary education.

Handicapped children. The Education Department published, in the Sept. 8 Federal Register, a revised schedule of regional briefings and hearings on the proposed regulations for the Assistance to States for Education of Handicapped Children program, published earlier in the Aug. 4 Federal Register. Two newly scheduled sessions are for Region III on Oct. 4-5 in Philadelphia at University City High School Auditorium on 36th and Ludlow streets and for Region VII on Oct. 5-6 in Kansas City at the Performing Arts Theater of Kansas City Community College, 7250 State Ave. Hearings to which evening hours or extra days have been added include Region VI on Sept. 22-24 in Dallas and Region X on Sept. 22-23 in Seattle, Wash. Indian education. The Department of the Interior’s Bureau of Indian Affairs published, in the Sept. 13 Federal Register, proposed regulations that would change to cooperative agreements or grants the assistance that was formerly administered through contracts. These changes would affect the education grants under the Johnson-O’Malley Act; school construction grants or services for tribally operated schools that were previously private schools; and school construction grants for public schools. Comments must be submitted before Nov. 12. School bus safety standards. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration published, in the Aug. 26 Federal Register, a correction to the final regulations for the emergency-exit requirements for small school buses. Vocational education. The Education Department announced, in the Sept. 3 Federal Register, a meeting of the National Advisory Council on Vocational Education and meetings of its committees on Sept. 22, 9 A.M.-11:30 A.M. and 1:30 P.M.-4:30 P.M., and Sept. 23, 9 A.M-5 P.M., at the Capital Holiday Inn, 550 C St., S.W., Washington.
