C-SPAN Offers Current Events Aligned to States’ Standards

C-SPAN’s round-the-clock coverage of official Washington may satisfy the political junkie, but its endless stream of public-affairs programming could prove overwhelming for teachers seeking to enhance a 50-minute civics or current-events lesson.

Now, teachers can find clips on current events and public policy debates through C-SPAN Classroom. Through its updated Web site, the cable network offers a database of its video clips that are searchable by keyword.

Teachers can download clips for free with no copyright restrictions. The Web resource, for example, takes students to Washington for a recent hearing before the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee, or to Memphis for President Bush’s tour of Graceland last June with then-Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi of Japan, an avid Elvis Presley fan.

The Web site was designed to align with states’ social studies standards with the help of teachers who served as fellows this past summer at C-SPAN’s Washington headquarters.
