The National Board for Education Sciences, which advises the Education Department’s research arm, will explore research on ways to support English-language learners at its next meeting, scheduled for Oct. 3.
Sean Reardon, an associate education professor at Stanford University, is expected to discuss the evidence on the effectiveness of programs to boost achievement for English-learners. Reardon has previously studied Hispanic-White achievement gaps and also found rising achievement gaps between poor and wealthy students, concluding that “...economic inequality now exceeds racial inequality in education outcomes.”
In addition, the board plans to discuss potential changes to the Institute of Education Sciences as part of a reauthorization of the Education Sciences Reform Act, which governs federal education research and which is now being discussed in the House.
A final agenda for the meeting will be posted closed to the meeting date at the board’s web site.
