California could lose at least $15 million in federal Title I funds in its clash with the U.S. Department of Education over testing requirements, according to a letter sent last week to state education officials. The state could also lose additional money.
The department’s main beef with California is that not all students would take assessments in reading and math under the state’s current plan. That means schools would not have all the performance data the No Child Left Behind Act requires.
The state may also be slapped with a “high-risk grantee” label, making it tougher to snag federal competitive grants or flexibility.
