Data on Districts

By Debra Viadero — October 27, 2009 1 min read

Twenty-seven school districts have now reached the 100,000-plus student-enrollment mark, according to a report from the National Center on Education Statistics. Drawing on data from state reports to the U.S. Department of Education, the study puts the number of regular school districts operating across the nation in 2007-08 at 13,924. The 27 largest districts, while representing just 1 percent of the total, enroll 12.5 percent of public school students. The statisticians also list an additional 2,012 districts as independent charter agencies, which are entities in which all the schools are charters.
