A shooting inside the STEM School Highlands Ranch in suburban Denver earlier this week killed 18-year-old student Kendrick Castillo and injured eight other students. This incident resulted in the largest number of injuries in a school shooting so far this year, according to Education Week‘s school shooting tracker.
While school shootings are still statistically rare, the event has raised familiar questions about how to stop the violence and keep students safe.
