Federal law-enforcement officials conducted a raid April 19 on two administration buildings in the Prince George’s County, Md., school district in connection with an investigation into the business dealings of Andre J. Hornsby, the district’s chief executive officer.

About six agents from the Federal Bureau of Investigation searched and seized files and computer equipment from district headquarters and a media center, said John White, a spokesman for the 136,000-student district in suburban Washington.

The agents interviewed school system employees, he said, adding that the agents didn’t give a reason for their surprise visit. Baltimore-based FBI spokesman Barry Maddox declined to comment.

The schools chief came under scrutiny last year for approving a $1 million sole-source contract for LeapFrog Enterprises Inc., an Emeryville, Calif.-based educational software company that employed a woman Mr. Hornsby lived with.

He also came under fire for taking a 10-day trip to South Africa paid for by a company doing business with the school district. A district ethics panel later cleared Mr. Hornsby of wrongdoing in both matters.

The Prince George’s County school board met in closed session on April 21 to discuss the FBI raid and its ramifications for the district. Mr. Hornsby was unavailable for comment.
