Child Care

The House Subcommittee on Early Childhood, Youth, and Families held an informational hearing last week on federal child-care programs. Participants and administrators from child-care programs provided testimony.

Child Nutrition

The House Economic and Educational Opportunities Committee held a hearing last week on proposed changes to nutrition programs for children and the elderly, including the school-lunch and breakfast programs.


HR 667, HR 668, HR 728, HR 729

The House Judiciary Committee was marking up several components of crime legislation last week that it plans to combine into a single bill on the House floor. The bills would strengthen the death penalty, toughen sentences for violent criminals, and provide money to local law-enforcement agencies.

Economic Competitiveness

The Senate Subcommittee on Education, Arts, and the Humanities held a hearing last week on the impact of education on economic competitiveness. The hearing featured testimony from business officials who underscored the importance of education to individual and corporate economic success.

Welfare Reform

The House Economic and Educational Opportunities Committee and the House Ways and Means Committee held a series of hearings last week on "the personal responsibility act." Government witnesses, welfare recipients, and child advocates testified about strategies for overhauling the welfare system.
