Now that the baseball labor dispute is over, the Milwaukee Brewers are anxious to avoid a dispute of another kind.
Acting on complaints from school districts statewide about opening-day truancy in past years, the team is working to discourage students from cutting class for the afternoon home opener on April 10. As an inducement, the team is offering students from across Wisconsin free admission to a Sunday-afternoon game April 22.
Pearl Martin, who taught in one-room schoolhouses in rural Missouri in the early 1900’s, had a reputation as a tough taskmaster. But when her will was read recently, there was evidence that she had a soft spot for her tiny home district: She left a bequest of $500,000 for its library.
Ms. Martin died last month at age 97 and amazed school officials by leaving the vast sum to the Bronaugh R-7 school district and its 260 students.
School officials plan to use the bequest to increase the 7,500-volume library and buy audiovisual materials.
