For much of the last two years, millions of students spent less face-to-face time with teachers during a critical period of their reading development, and studies of reading performance on tests during 2020-21 showed that they lagged the progress of their peers in previous years. Black and Hispanic students were especially hard hit, having stayed in remote classrooms longer on average than their white peers.
