When students can summarize a chapter, explain a concept, or find an answer in seconds, how do we ensure they are still engaging deeply with what they learn?
New Pearson research analyzing nearly 80 million interactions from approximately 400,000 higher education students offers an encouraging perspective. Students who used AI study tools intentionally designed around learning science were significantly more likely to engage in active reading behaviors, including highlighting, note-taking, asking questions, and practicing retrieval. The findings suggest that thoughtfully designed AI can do more than provide answers; it can encourage students to engage more actively in the learning process.
