Reading and writing aren’t things our brains are naturally wired to do, they are skills we build with the help of explicit, systematic, and cumulative instruction. The Science of Reading has inspired policymakers and educators to evolve the way reading is taught in our nation’s schools, most prominently through a stronger focus on phonics and phonemic awareness in early grades.

So, what’s next? As new research and technologies emerge, what’s on the horizon for reading instruction? What shifts are coming next, and how can educators and leaders prepare?

Join us for a discussion exploring the future of the Science of Reading. We’ll dive into what might stay the same, what might change, and how we can stay ahead in supporting every student’s journey to literacy.

Barbara runs StandardsWork (www.standardswork.org) and serves as Executive Director of the Knowledge Matters Campaign (www.knowledgematterscampaign.org) which, among other things, sponsors the Knowledge Matters School Tour designed to “find the good and praise” districts that are utilizing these three levers to change outcomes for students.
