WOMEN’S WORK. Vocational programs were not restricted to boys and men. At the Manhattan Trade School, young women learned the sought-after sewing skills they would need to land a job in the city’s garment district. (July 3, 1919)

ASSEMBLY LINE LESSONS.

The district’s broad range of vocational- education offerings included Textile High School -- dedicated to teaching the workplace skills required in that industry -- complete with a working production line. (March 8, 1932)

VOYAGE OF DISCOVERY.In 1908, the U.S. Navy loaned the board of education the Newport, a three-masted barkentine.On the annual cruise of 1910, 100 boys logged 11,000 miles between May and October, visiting 19 ports from Scotland and Denmark to Madeira and Bermuda. Maritime training was discontinued in 1913, and the ship was transferred to theNew York State Merchant Marine Academy. (Undated)
