“The State of the World’s Children 2006: Excluded and Invisible” is available from UNICEF.

Every year, more than 50 million births are unregistered in the developing world, excluding China, resulting in many of those children’s lack of access to education, health care, and other social services, concludes a report by UNICEF.

The study also found other barriers to education for children around the world. An estimated 173 million children, of whom 73 million are under the age of 10, work in hazardous situations or condi-tions, and 250,000 are serving as soldiers. In developing countries, one in three girls is married before age 18.
