The sexually explicit performances of the Beastie Boys rap group have prompted the Jacksonville, Fla., City Council to pass an ordinance requiring concert advertisements to warn that such groups’ material “may be harmful to minors.’'

Under the ordinance, newspaper, radio, television, and marquee ads for concerts containing similarly “adult’’ material must carry the warnings.

The ordinance, which was passed on March 24, applies to shows that rent city facilities. City council members said they received complaints from parents about the Feb. 27 performance of the Beastie Boys and two other rap groups.

“I was tired of them showing nudity and profanity to these young kids without parents knowing about it,’' said Councilman Joe Forshee, who sponsored the ordinance.

The group reportedly “mooned’’ the audience, used profanity, and included a 15-foot inflatable phallus among its stage props.

The council’s action will require wording in ads to alert parents that such shows contain “material of an adult nature, or which may be harmful to minors.’'--K.G.
