Elaine R. Jones, the president and director-counsel of the NAACP Legal Defense and Educational Fund Inc., has announced that she will step down May 1.

Ms. Jones, 59, has served as the head of the legal-advocacy organization for 11 years.

The New York City-based Legal Defense and Educational Fund works on issues related to education, affirmative action, civic participation, economic access, and criminal justice. Lawyers for the organization represented the plaintiffs in Brown v. Board of Education of Topeka and other major desegregation cases.

The search for a successor to Ms. Jones has not yet begun.

Arthur Griffin Jr. has been named the vice president of National Urban Markets for McGraw-Hill Education, a publisher of pre-K-12 educational materials.

Mr. Griffin, 55, a former member of the Charlotte-Mecklenburg school board in North Carolina, previously worked as a senior litigation paralegal with the Charlotte law firm of Cox, Gage, & Sasser.

National Urban Markets is a newly created division of the New York City-based McGraw-Hill Education that will work to improve student achievement in large school districts. The Charlotte- Mecklenburg school district has 112,000 students.

Wesley A. Hoover has been elected the chairman of the National Education Knowledge Industry Association.

Mr. Hoover, 54, who began serving his one-year term in December, has been the president and chief executive officer of the Austin, Texas-based Southwest Educational Development Laboratory since 1996. The laboratory is a nonprofit education research and development organization.

The Washington-based NEKIA provides support for educational researchers, entrepreneurs, and service providers.
