Only months after graduating college, Michigan native Ben Seymour spurned the established career trajectory of promising teacher candidates in the lower 48 states, instead opting to go teach on the remote Alaskan island of Little Diomede, in the Bering Strait. Despite sparse living conditions, subzero temperatures, and polar bears, he’s happy to stay.

Follow Education Week reporter Sean Cavanagagh and assistant photo editor James Prichard as they record a day-in-the-life of 1st and 2nd grade teacher Ben Seymour in Little Diomede’s Inupiaq village.
