Online Teacher Center Launched in South

The Southern Regional Education Board, a 16-member interstate compact, has set up an online teacher center designed to direct both beginning and experienced educators to information about the teaching profession.

The site, www.electroniccampus.org/Teacher Center/, provides links to online courses and professional-development opportunities, as well as information about licensing, certification, alternative routes to teaching careers, and definitions for “highly qualified” teachers under the federal No Child Left Behind Act.

Louisiana Gov. Kathleen Babineauz Blanco, the current SREB chairwoman, announced the new center last fall.

“We created a one-stop source of information and resources for teachers, administrators, counselors, librarians, teacher aides, and others who are, or want to become, teachers,” Gov. Blanco said in a press release. “The center allows people with careers outside of teaching to easily get to our states’ alternative teacher-preparation-programs, to search online courses and programs quickly and easily, to link to professional-development courses, and to apply for admission or financial aid with a few clicks of the mouse.”

The site also allows teachers or prospective teachers to search for financial aid, ask an expert a question about the profession, and virtually “tour” college campuses in any of the member states.
