A lawsuit filed against the nation’s largest school system says New York City education leaders have ignored state law and allowed class sizes to grow.
The lawsuit was filed by the teacher’s union, the United Federation of Teachers, along with a few other local advocacy groups.
The school system says it has not violated the law, and is coping with budget cuts that have not allowed it to hire more teachers.
It remains to be seen, however, if this lawsuit will stay in court, as education officials noted the law the UFT says was broken requires violations be taken to the state education commissioner, who is to have the final say. You can read much more background in this story in The New York Times.
