The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission has issued a warning that movable soccer goals can tip over and kill children who climb on them.
The commission reported this month that falling soccer goals have been linked to seven deaths since 1983, including three in 1989.
Most of the deaths resulted from children climbing on the netting or crossbar of a soccer goal. The commission noted, however, that the goals also can tip over in high winds.
The commission recommended that coaches and other school officials anchor the goals to the ground and warn children not to climb on them.
The commission also said it is encouraging the manufacturers of movable soccer goals to develop a voluntary standard to make the goals more stable.
