Indiana Superintendent of Public Instruction Suellen K. Reed announced earlier this month that she has decided against seeking re-election this year to a fifth term.

Ms. Reed, a Republican, was first elected in 1992 and supervised the implementation of a more rigorous, college-preparatory curriculum and a controversial high school exit exam. A former teacher, she has championed an expansion of full-day kindergarten and stressed the importance of professional development for teachers. Her term expires in December, and she has not announced what she will do next.

Delegates to Indiana’s Democratic and Republican conventions nominate their choices for the statewide office. Voters then pick the winner on the general-election ballot in November.
