Karen A. Johnson joined Valente & Associates this month as a senior member.
Ms. Johnson, 42, stepped down last month as the assistant secretary for legislation and congressional affairs in the U.S. Department of Education. She has also worked as the vice president of social marketing and public affairs at Porter Novelli, an international public relations firm.
Valente & Associates is a Washington-based governmental-affairs firm.
