Researchers are testing 4th and 9th graders in 34 countries on their ability to read narratives, expository prose, and documents. A report on the U.S. re sults is expected to be released in July 1992.$

Sponsored by the NEA and co-ordinated by Ronald Anderson, professor of sociology at the University of Minnesota. Researchers are writing a report on the first stage, in which they collected data from 20 countries on facilities and curricula. In the second stage, scheduled to get under way next year with a re port scheduled for 1993, researchers will test students on computer competence and attitudes at three grade levels, as well as gather information from principals and teachers.

Preprimary Project Sponsored by the International Association for the Evaluation of Education Achievement (IEA) and coordinated by David P. WeiH kart, president of the High/Scope Educational Research Foundation. In the first stage, researchers surveyed 14 countries’ policies on early-childhood education and care. A report on those results was issued last year. In the second stage, researchers have collected and are analyzing data from 12 of the countries on the experiences of young children in different settings and the quality of such experiences. In the proposed third stage, researchers will survey children at age 7 to gauge the out comes of their early experiences and care.

International Assessment of Educational Progress

Sponsored by the Educational Testing Service and directed by Archie E. Lapointe, director of ETS’s center for the assessment of educational progress. Testing 9- and 13-year-olds in 20 nations in mathematics and science. Report scheduled for 1992.

Third International Mathematics And Science Study

Sponsored by the IEA; currently seeking a U.S. coordinator. Under existing plans, the study will be administered during the 1993-94 and 1997-98 school years. It will consist of a core test to be administered to students at ages 9 and 13; an optional test of students in their last year of secondary school; and two smaller-scale qualitative studies, including classroom observations and interviews.
