Recent results from Indiana’s state assessments in English and mathematics showed only slightly improved or stagnant scores compared with 2003.

“While recognizing that we must do better, we also know that as passing scores continue to rise, we reach a new plateau of achievement,” state Superintendent of Public Instruction Suellen Reed said in a Dec. 9 statement. “Scaling that high ground is our next challenge.”

Among other results on the Indiana Statewide Testing for Educational Progress-Plus for 2004, the same percentage of 3rd graders as the year before—75 percent—passed the English exam. Seventy percent of 6th graders passed English, an increase of just 1 percentage point from 2003, while 75 percent of 6th graders passed the mathematics exam, up 2 percentage points. Sixty-one percent of 8th graders passed English and math, an increase of 3 percentage points.
