Charitable giving to the nation’s colleges and universities declined 11.9 percent in 2009, to $27.85 billion, according to results of an annual survey.

The Council for Aid to Education of New York City said the decline was the steepest in the surveys history. Over the past 10 years, contributions to higher education institutions have increased by an average of 4.1 percent per year.
