Ernest L. Boyer, the longtime president of the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching and one of the nation’s most prominent educators, died Dec. 8 at his home in Princeton, N.J. He was 67.

Mr. Boyer served as the U.S. commissioner of education under President Carter before being named to the top post at the Princeton-based foundation in 1979.

As the author of a series of reports on every level of schooling, he was a leading figure in shaping the national debate on education. He was regarded more as a moderator than a critic in the reform arena. (See Education Week, May 24, 1995.)

Mr. Boyer was diagnosed with lymphoma more than three years ago and had been undergoing chemotherapy. He is survived by his wife, Kay, four children, and 12 grandchildren.

A version of this article appeared in the December 13, 1995 edition of Education Week as Ernest L. Boyer, Carnegie Foundation Head, Dies at 67
