Helping students make sense of events around the world is one goal of education, but when those events include topics like terrorism or religion, it can be hard for teachers to know what to say. My colleague, Jaclyn Zubrzycki, delved into the challenges teachers face in addressing potentially controversial topics in the classroom in this Education Week story.
In this short video, John Tulenko speaks with Calee Prindle, who teaches English at The Facing History School in New York City. After the ISIS Paris attacks in November, Prindle wondered how to constructively discuss the news with her high school students. Prindle shares her experience, and offers activities and ideas to help initiate difficult discussions.
