Aug. 18—Call for proposals: Applications are due for proposals for the 5th Annual Hawaii International Conference on Education in Honolulu Jan. 6-9. Sept. 1—Reading: Applications are due for two awards from the International Reading Association honoring journal publications. The Albert J. Harris Award recognizes a journal article or monograph addressing the prevention or assessment of reading or learning disabilities. The Dina Feitelson Research Award, which includes a $500 cash prize, honors an empirical study that appears in a refereed journal and is on one or more aspects of literacy acquisition. Sept. 8—Urban leadership: Resumes are due for The Broad Academy, sponsored by The Broad Center for the Management of School Systems. The Academy trains individuals from education, business, the military, nonprofit organizations, and government for executive leadership roles in urban school districts. After a complete review of resumes, selected candidates will be sent applications via email. Resumes should be sent by email to academy@broadcenter.org.
Student Awards, Contests, and Scholarships
Sept. 1—Environmentalism: Applications are due for Red, White, & Green Climate Change grants from the Civil Society Institute and Youth Service America. Youths ages 15-25 or organizations working with youths in that age range can apply for $500 grants to support youth-led service-learning projects that promote awareness about global climate change. The projects must take place between Oct. 1, 2006 and Nov. 30, 2006. Applications are online at www.ysa.org/awards.
Sept. 15—Future educators: Proposals are due for the 18th Annual Future Educators Association Conference, sponsored by Phi Delta Kappa International, in San Diego Feb. 16-18. FEA chapters nationwide are invited to submit proposals for 60-minute long sessions led by student members.
