Leading Republicans in Congress are calling for an investigation of fraud in federal education programs.

Citing several reports of recent mismanagement of federal money, Rep. Howard P. “Buck” McKeon of California and Rep. Michael N. Castle of Delaware said federal officials should review whether they need to improve administrative procedures designed to stop fraud.

The U.S. Government Accountability Office, the investigative arm of Congress, and the U.S. Department of Education’s inspector general should “undertake a thorough analysis of what safeguards are in place to protect taxpayer dollars and whether those safeguards are effective,” the lawmakers wrote in a joint statement, released May 28.

Rep. McKeon is the senior GOP member of the House Education and Labor Committee, and Rep. Castle is the senior Republican on the House Early Childhood, Elementary, and Secondary Education Subcommittee.
