Thirty people from a range of fields this summer began a yearlong training program as the first participants in a new effort designed to develop a cadre of urban school superintendents.

The 1992 participants in “Superintendents Prepared,’' a foundation-supported effort by three Washington-based groups, include representatives from business, the military, and the criminal-justice system, as well as educators.

The 1992 participants include:

Dawn F. Arno, executive director of budgets and audits, Fulton County (Ga.) Board of Education; Michael P. Benway, superintendent of schools, Valparaiso (Ind.) Community Schools; Elba S. Berlin, assistant superintendent of schools, Jackson (Mich.) Public Schools; Edmond E. Beverly, superintendent of schools, School District of the City of Inkster, Mich.; Denise G. Borders, chief of educational accountability, Baltimore City Public Schools; Constance R. Clark, deputy superintendent, District of Columbia Public Schools; Gene E. Davenport, superintendent of schools, Allen (Tex.) Independent School District; Philip E. Geiger, superintendent of schools, Piscataway (N.J.) Board of Education; Libia S. Gil, assistant superintendent for curriculum and instructional support, Seattle Public Schools; Dan M. Isaacs, assistant superintendent, senior-high-schools division, Los Angeles Unified School District; Clifford B. Janey, superintendent, east zone, Boston Public Schools; Joseph F. Johnson, associate superintendent, New Hanover County (N.C.) Schools; William Lawrence, president and executive director, Private Industry Council of Milwaukee County.
