Child Care

HR 3

The House last week passed legislation to aid low-income parents in obtaining child care. (See page 38.)

Copyright Lawsuits

S 497, HR 3045

The Senate Judiciary Committee last week approved legislation making public schools and universities and other state-related institutions subject to lawsuits for copyright violations.

Democratic Education Initiatives

HR 4379

Representative Augustus F. Hawkins, the chairman of the House Education and Labor Committee, last week introduced an omnibus bill that combines some of President Bush’s education initiatives with Democratic proposals and would raise authorization levels for many existing education programs. (See page 38.)

Youth Service

HR 4330

Representative Hawkins March 22 introduced legislation authorizing a total of $183 million for a wide range of volunteer programs, including those involving schools.
