Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger has joined business leaders and the University of California and California State University systems in launching a venture to prepare and supply more science and mathematics teachers in the state’s public schools.

Under the program, which the governor called an economic imperative, the UC system will try to quadruple the number of credentialed math and science teachers from 250 per year to 1,000 per year by 2010. The CSU system will also expand its teacher-preparation efforts in those areas, according to a written description of the plan.

The UC portion of the plan calls for recruitment of math and science majors into the program, early classroom exposure, summer institutes, and fully paid one-year internships after graduation.

Money for the program will come from state and private sources.
