The chairman of the House education committee has officially declared himself a candidate for House majority leader.

Rep. John A. Boehner, R-Ohio, who has led the Education and the Workforce Committee since 2001, outlined his agenda for House Republicans in a memo on Jan. 9, a day after Rep. Tom DeLay, R-Texas, said he would not seek re-election as majority leader. Mr. DeLay was indicted in Texas last year for alleged violations of state campaign-finance laws.

Rep. Boehner’s rival to become the GOP floor leader is Rep. Roy Blunt of Missouri, who has been the acting majority leader.

House Republicans will take up the matter on Feb. 2. If Rep. Boehner wins the majority leader’s post, Rep. Howard P. “Buck” McKeon of California is his most likely replacement as the chairman of the education committee.
