Position: Professor emeritus, Brown University, and visiting professor, Harvard and Brandeis universities; founder and chairman emeritus of the Coali- tion of Essential Schools, a national network of schools and centers engaged in restructuring and redesigning schools.

Education:Bachelor’s degree, Yale University, 1953; Master of Arts in Teaching in social studies and Ph.D. in education and American history, Harvard University, 1957 and 1961, respectively.
