Anxious Day in Chicago as Schools Open

Thousands of Chicago students are heading to new schools today as the academic year begins there. It’s sure to be a tense day, coming in the wake of this summer’s closure of nearly 50 elementary schools.

Education Week‘s Jackie Zubrzycki will be on the ground in Chicago reporting from neighborhoods and schools most affected by the controversial closures and reassignments. Much of the day’s focus will be on the “safe passages” program that district and city officials set up over the summer to allay concerns that reassigned students would have to walk through crime-ridden neighborhoods and gang turf to get to school.
