Anthony P. Cavanna has been named a principal research scientist and the vice president for education systems design for the American Institutes for Research and New American Schools, which are set to complete a merger in January.
Formerly the superintendent of the 3,400-student Fort Lee, N.J., school district, Mr. Cavanna, 54, began his new position last month.
The Washington-based AIR is a nonprofit research organization, and New American Schools is a national school reform group based in Alexandria, Va.
