State May Prescribe N.Y.C. Evaluation Plan
Gov. Andrew Cuomo of New York says that if New York City Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg and the city teachers' union can't agree on a teacher-evaluation system, the state will impose one.
The Democratic governor said last week he'll propose a law to allow the state education department to develop a system to evaluate New York City teachers if a deal isn't reached by September. State law requires a deal by then to avoid the loss of more than $200 million in state aid and more federal aid.
Lack of a deal has already cost the city more than $250 million in state aid to its schools under a 2010 law aimed at improving education and securing a federal grant to help reform education. Legislative leaders appear to support Gov. Cuomo's idea.
